So, is 2 hours with dolphins a good day?

Two water entries, but poor visSo, we cannot say that today was a bad day. If we did, we’d be crazy. But, considering we had dolphins in view for about two hours, and we had two water entries, it may not have been a productive video day. We came upon spotted dolphins at 17:29. However, these dolphins were already with another dolphin boat, so we decided to slowly make our way past.

No spotteds, but plenty of bottlenose

A sunset bottlenose sighting  Today the seas were a bit calmer, but apparently the spotted population was tired out from yesterday! We were without dolphins for the first 3 hours and 45 minutes, but at 19:11 we saw two bottlenose dolphins. We know that this will shock everyone, but the bottlenose were not very interested in us or the boat.

A great day

Roughly one-third of the entire populationToday we provided passengers with the casual presentation, elaborating on the information they had already been given about the dolphins. Each week, this presentation takes different turns, dictated by the passenger needs and enthusiasm. Today was a great one!
Today also marks our 21st trip of the season, which is pretty good considering the fact that dolphin trips have not been as consistent as usual.

Rough seas won

Today was still a bit rough thanks to DennisToday Kel’s family made it in safely along with our weekly passengers who are eager to head out on the boat. But, with winds still a bit strong, our departure from the dock was a bit tentative. We began with a snorkel stop at Rainbow Reef, a 20-25 foot site.

DENNIS!!!!!!!!

Hurricane Dennis is far from the island, but is affecting us nonetheless  Well, it’s been a very quiet three days, as Hurricane Dennis, which is hundred of miles from Bimini, brings lots of wind to Bimini. The seas are rough and Chalk’s, the seaplane which provides service from Ft. Lauderdale, FL to North Bimini, stopped flying yesterday. And since there are no flights in or out of the island today, Saturday, it means Kel’s mother and brother are spending the night in Ft. Lauderdale.

A day of surface observations

We saw dolphins today, but didn’t get in the waterToday was a nice trip with dolphins sighted at 17:57. This was a group of 6-7 animals, including 3 calves, who were moving too quickly for us to get in the water. They did show some interest in the boat though, so we were able to observe them from the boat for about 20 minutes. Niecey (#48) was there, which means Dandy (#77) may have been one of the three calves.

Happy Birthday Kel!

No boat, but lots of fireworks   Just a quick report today, since we didn’t go out on the boat. It was Kel’s birthday, so we were a bit lazy…We had a nice dinner at the hotel and watched the fireworks as they were set off from a barge in the harbor.

Random Boat Trip

Trip 18 is a full boat! The first sighting of today was of two spotted dolphins who were moving too quickly to enter the water for awhile. We followed the group for about 40 minutes before entering the water, hoping to get a look at them. They stuck around for about 10 minutes, but we’ll… Continue reading Random Boat Trip

Day Off the Boat

Filled with Errands  Today was spent off the boat, finishing up a little bit of data and being domestic as we cleaned the apartment and ran errands. The island is EXTREMELY busy (for Bimini) as boaters from Florida fill every possible slip at every possible dock for the US holiday weekend. Seems a bit silly but this is a great spot to spend the 4th of July weekend. There should be parades, fireworks and other festive activities.

Good Weather

Good trip to end the week     Today was the last trip with this group of fabulous passengers! Thanks to them for such a great week–they were very interested in our work, respectful of the dolphins, and flexible and good spirited as related to the weather.     Today we first sighted dolphins at 17:17 and last saw… Continue reading Good Weather
