Mighty Sea Beagle
Umi, the Mighty Sea Beagle, never sets paw on a boat without her trusty yellow life jacket. She was born in Osaka, Japan, to a litter including five brothers. She came to live with Kathleen on Miyake Island at the age of 7 weeks and soon made herself right at home.
Umi easily makes friends and is trilingual, or maybe quadra-lingual … She understands Japanese, English and the canine bark code in both the U.S.

Research Interests: Research interests include comparative cognition and behavior, including animal emotions and welfare.

Kel has been a part of the DCP team since 2003. Born and raised in North Haven, Connecticut, USA, she graduated from Connecticut College in 2004 after having spent time living in Australia and attending the University of Glasgow, Scotland. Always interested in the marine environment, she joined DCP as an undergraduate intern in the summer 2003, which allowed her to combine this interest with her love of traveling and experiencing new cultures.

Justin Gregg, Ph.D.

Senior Research Associate

Justin Gregg received his doctorate from the School of Psychology at Trinity College Dublin in Dublin Ireland in 2008. He has been a research associate with DCP since 2004, assisting with data collection on Bimini for 2004 and leading the field research on Mikura Island for the 2005, 2006, and 2007 field seasons.

John Anderson

Director, Terramar Productions
 
John Anderson has been diving for 35 years and photographing ocean wildlife for more than 25 years. In 1999, he launched Terramar Productions LLC, a young, though seasoned, media production company, to focus his talents on creating marine-related environmental films, DVDs and fine art photography. With thousands of frames exposed, and having worked on film greats such as the IMAX  “Dolphins ” and “Amazing Caves ”, Anderson specializes in video and photography on and under the water.

Stan Kuczaj, Ph.D.

Stan Kuczaj was a longtime friend of and collaborator with the Dolphin Communication Project. Everyone here at DCP is sad to have lost Stan, but are eternally grateful for all that he has done for our organization, and for his amazing contributions to marine mammal science. Below is a biography of Stan that was published in Aquatic Mammals Journal.

On 14 April 2016, the scientific community lost Dr. Stan Kuczaj, professor at the University of Southern Mississippi and Director of the Marine Mammal Behavior and Cognition Laboratory. He was a beloved teacher, researcher, friend, mentor, and colleague.

Elizabeth Hawkins, Ph.D.

Director,  Dolphin Research Australia
Elizabeth Hawkins, PhD Since 2000, Dr. Elizabeth Hawkins has been researching the intricate and fascinating lives of dolphins. Elizabeth’’s research focuses on the behaviour, social dynamics and communication of dolphins. Her honours research, which was completed in 2002, examined the behaviour and acoustics of a group of provisioned dolphins at Tangalooma, Moreton Island, Australia. In 2007, Elizabeth completed her PhD research with the Southern Cross University Whale Research Centre.

Briana Seay

Currently attending University of Southern Mississippi | Master’s/PhD student in Experimental Psychology
B.A. Environmental Studies (focus in Marine Biology), minor in Biology-Eckerd College 2005
Briana was born and raised in Orlando, Fl. She was obsessed with animals as young as she can remember and her first word was ”doggie”. In middle school she adopted a lab rat her aunt rescued and would stay up at night and record it’s behavior in her journal.
