This morning was quiet & relaxing for Kath’s birthday. This afternoon was stressful. We went out on the boat and everything was going fairly normally. Then we realized that water visibility was dropping & dropping quickly. It almost looked as if there was some sort of algal bloom because the water was such a thick consistency and green color. We therefore stayed closer to shore where it was more like watered down pea soup. We found dolphins & hopped in the water, but couldn’t see a thing.

A dolphin-free day
Errands, party planning & a great time! We hosted what was, in our opinion, a very fun shin-dig in honor of Kath’s birthday. Her birthday is technically tomorrow, but we have a dolphin trip then…plus, it just meant that we had to stay up passed midnight & ring in her official birthday!! It was great fun…. Tomorrow, another dolphin trip! Until then, Kel &
Bye John!
Today began slow & relaxing. We were sad to see John off, but that time came around 15:00. We had a great time during his visit and are looking forward to seeing more of his project & his next visit! Then it was a dolphin trip for us. It was a fairly small group of passengers, which is always nice. We first saw a mom & calf. Calf had a very fresh, shallow, but nasty wound on its left side.
A long, good day
was “Honeymoon Harbor” to see the stingrays. There was good and “bad” on this excursion…Good: We saw stingrays (and a friendly barracuda). Visibility was amazing. John got a few really nice shots. The Bad: We forgot to bring bait to feed the rays!! So, they weren’t really interested in us- since we clearly had nothing to offer them. Luckily, John is so laid back, he was happy just be there and get some beautiful shots. After Honeymoon Harbor, we headed to the Sapona- Darcie &
A golf cart tour ends with the unexpected
Not much about today went as expected, but it was still a great one. We just did some odds & ends this morning then borrowed a friend’s golf cart to show John the rest of the island. At the northern-most point, in the midst of a very large (and destructive) development, we got off the cart to wander for a minute while John filmed. An hour later, we were feeling thirsty & crispy and headed home…but that hour was great! What got our attention for so long?
Did you say Bedazzling?
We actually got up early today….and were fairly cheerful. We went down to the dock with John to film for bit and later in the day we sat at the edge of the beach for some interview questions. Then some Bimini Undersea family came over and the house became even more inundated with estrogen. With the inspiration of Bimini Undersea crew, we had a “bedazzling party.” For those of you who may be unfamiliar with the activity of bedazzling, it involves lots of needles, thread, shiny beads, sequences and staff shirts.
Data, Filming & Burritos
While John & his camera wandered the island this morning, we tackled the remainder of MVA tape 1. Hopefully the rest of the tapes won’t take us quite as long as this one! But, it is rewarding when you finish- especially when it involves some tricky IDs! The rest of the day included some more filming- us leaving the house & returning, as if it were a boat day and then a bit just enjoying an afternoon swim. And then we made really tasty beef burritos for dinner. Mmmmmm……
More bla weather
Tropical Storm Alberto is ruining things! We don’t really mean that, because we’re happy to be well on the outskirts of the storm, but we are not used to so many overcast days here on Bimini! Luckily, John is so flexible. We spent the early afternoon exploring the Gallant Lady (a rusted ship on the southwest shore of Bimini) then went indoors for a lesson in PhotoShop. Our pictures have never looked better!
Another gloomy day
Today started with a very lazy morning! But, then we decided to brave the threatening weather. We headed north to snorkel at Atlantis for John to get some shots. He filmed us with the array and just checking out the site. The sun never did come out, but the sea was much flatter, so it was a more pleasant ride back to the dock. Then it was home before sunset and John made a fabulous dinner for us all! A pretty good day- with one exception.
Exploring North
A friend kindly took us out today to explore the northern reaches of Bimini. We anchored offshore and waded into the mangroves. It was low tide, something we hadn’t considered before heading out, so it meant very shallow water & poor visibility. The trouble with the water around the mangroves is that the slightest kick stirs up a LOT of silt & you find yourself in the midst of cloud of goo. Yes, goo is the official term! We found one lone pufferfish & a very friendly schoolmaster snapper who took refuge around Kel!
