Data collection & exploration

A nice afternoon at Ardastra Gardens & Zoo This morning I was able to collect data from the older male dolphins (Jake, Fatman, and McGyver) and from Dot and her calf. After two half-hour data collection sessions, MaryEllen and I continued to explore all that Nassau has to offer.

Our first day at Dolphin Encounters!

Data collection went well this morning After collecting an hour of video with the dolphins at DE, MaryEllen and I explored Paradise Island a bit today, as research for activities for the EcoTours and Teen Trips that we are planning for the future. One of our main goals this January is to plan out these trips, so we spent the day looking for daily activities, including snorkelling trips, educational tours, and places to eat.

Fire ants are not my friends

Well, I have to admit, I did not get much work done today.  Last night I took my pajamas out of my suitcase and there were three fire ants on them.  It was late, dark outside & I was tired, so I squished those ants & went to bed.  Flash forward to this morning.  We decide it was best to take my bag outside & sort out the ant situation.  Good thing we did!  It was absolutely covered with fire ants!!  They were in ALL of my clothes & all over my bag.

We made it!!

MaryEllen and I made it safely to Nassau MaryEllen and I arrived in Nassau late this afternoon, settled in to our borrowed condo (thanks Peter!!), and headed out for dinner.

Another spot-less day

Trip #2 has left me 0 for 2 in regard to spotted, but 2 for 2 with bottlenose.  Today’s group of bottlenose was five strong, including two fairly small calves.  I took over 130 digital photographs from the boat, so hopefully at least a few will be useful!!    Tomorrow I’ll go through photographs, catch up on these field reports & some other “office-type” things.  We’ll likely take a couple of days break & head out in search of dolphins next week.

Happy New Year!

I had a nice New Year’s Eve, although the island was probably quieter than the local businesses would have liked.  The winds have died down a bit (about 10 knots) so I headed out for a dolphin trip.  It was the first time I’ve ever been out without anyone else on the boat- except for the captain of course!

DE Winter Session Approaching

We have lots going on this January! Our upcoming trip includes A LOT of new things, including scouting for an education trip and new EcoTours, new research, and continued data collection.

I

I’m here, safe & sound in Bimini & couldn’t be happier.  All four of my flights (phew!) went very smoothly and although I had one very close connection, all of my baggage managed to arrive with me, in good shape.  The island feels fairly quiet for a holiday weekend, but the strong east wind is likely keeping Florida boaters away.  Hopefully there will be some folks interested in a dolphin trip, but if not, I’ll head out by myself with Bimini Undersea on the next good weather day.
