Dolphin Encounters (DE) at Blue Lagoon Island is one of the top tourist attractions in Nassau, The Bahamas and is owned and operated by a local family. DE began in 1989 when two Atlantic Bottlenose dolphins were rescued from an aquarium that closed in Nassau. The animals were relocated to a large all-natural seawater dolphin habitat on Treasure Island, Abaco, The Bahamas. Soon after, six more dolphins joined their marine mammal family, which created the foundation of what is today known as Dolphin Encounters.

The MVA
The Mobile Video/Acoustic System – MVA
(a.k.a. “array”)
The mobile video/acoustic system (MVA) was developed to permit real-time synchronous recording of the sounds and behaviors of individual, free-swimming dolphins. Manually operated under water, the system consists of two omni-directional hydrophones cabled through a custom underwater housing into a stereo video camera. Hydrophone spacing on the housing is scaled to the human inter-aural distance based upon the speed of sound in water (4.5 times faster than in air).

If you are interested in adopting Joanne, please click here to learn all about our adopt-a-wild-dolphin program. But, since Joanne’s own webpage isn’t up and running yet, please email us at to adopt Joanne.

Computer work on Blue Lagoon Island
We had our third day of strong winds and choppy seas. The ferry boat ride from Paradise Island to Blue Lagoon Island was spray filled from the sea and the last bit of the trek was choppy as we passed through the cut. Our first view into the pools showed a much decreased underwater visibility. Thus, we did not get wet today. Instead, we reviewed some computer files for grant applications and for papers.
