Meeting Dolphins

Meeting Dolphins: My Adventures in the Sea
By Kathleen Dudzinski

Meeting Dolphins is one of two companion books from National Geographic Books that tie in to the MacGillivray Freeman Films large format production DOLPHINS. The adult book, Dolphins, by Tim Cahill chronicles research by Dudzinski, Bernd Würsig and Alejandro Acevedo in the Bahamas, Japan and Patagonia, Argentina. Meeting Dolphins, written by Kathleen Dudzinski, is targeted to children ages eight and older. In her own words, Kathleen tells her story of swimming with dolphins to observe them and to learn how they communicate in the wild.

Frequently Asked Questions
What the heck is a Podcast?
Podcasts are audio and video files that you can download to your computer and listen to whenever you want. The name ‘podcast’ is a bit misleading – you do not need an iPod to listen to a podcast; anyone with a computer and an internet connection can download podcasts. Podcasts often sound a lot like a traditional radio broadcasts, but style and content vary depending on the subject matter. For instance; NPR offers podcasts of their popular radio programs, MIT provides podcasts of lectures for undergraduate classes.

Theses/Dissertations

Dudzinski, K. (1996) Communication and Behavior in the Atlantic Spotted Dolphins (Stenella frontalis): Relationships Between Vocal and Behavioral Activities.
The University of Connecticut
Abstract:
This work presents a description of behaviors and vocalizations of freeranging Atlantic spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis) in Bahamian waters. The objective is to elucidate mechanisms of intraspecific communication in these dolphins by interpretation of associations between vocal structures, social context, and observed behaviors. The ultimate goal is to evaluate communication and behavior of spotted dolphins in order to eventually understand how an aquatic mammal’s sensory abilities permit it to adapt to an environment foreign to terrestrial mammals.

Dolphin Books

Below are dolphin science books that DCP recommends if you’re interested in learning more about dolphins.

Nemo Vocalization

The Dolphin Communication Project studies a group of Atlantic spotted dolphins living near the island of Bimini in The Bahamas. Using a special video camera equipped with underwater microphones (i.e., hydrophones), we are able to record their behavior as well as the myriad of sounds they produce. Our equipment makes it possible for us to determine which dolphin is producing which vocalization.
