Dolphins, Shark, Rain (LOTS of rain)

Both Manon and I woke early but enjoyed the view of the ocean from the N side of Anthony’s Key. We traveled to Bailey’s Key on a dry water taxi. Two of Bailey’s cats greeted us, though we were treat-less. The dolphins were very happy to see us and greeted us at the platform as Kathleen prepared to enter the water. Bailey’s calf played with Tilly, Mr. French rubbed on the rope, and Ronnie followed Manon until she stepped to each platform. The underwater vis was bleh, which translates to silty and less than 3.5 m. Still, Kathleen was able to find the nurse shark that seems to have taken up residence in the main lagoon.

Neither the shark nor the dolphins seem to really want to cohabitate. It’ll be interesting to see what happens as the week progresses. Gizmo (featured photo) was very curious of the MVA, or of her reflection in the face plate.

Sandy spent time with Champ but also checked out the MVA, Kathleen, and each hydrophone.

We spent several hours in the early afternoon at Bailey’s chatting with Eldon and Teri and observing Bailey with her calf, and Tilly, Sandy, Elli, Ronnie, Alita and the whole gang. While the morning was cloudy but dry, the afternoon was not. To say it rained would be a gross understatement.

We hope tomorrow is less rainy, windy and with improved visibility! Fingers crossed.

Cheers

Kathleen & Manon
