Dolphins, Diving, Maya Key … and a giant grouper!!

We learned quickly that our days begin with data collection on the dolphins at Bailey’s Key. The boat ride to Bailey’s followed by dolphin observations is a great way to start each day (even if it is a bit earlier than we’d like! (all except Kathleen, that is!). We had a bit of prep after getting to Bailey’s Key … Kathleen and Manon made sure the MVA camera was on, and the o-rings lubed and the data sheets ready for another session. No one came to the platform as Kathleen put on her fins and mask.

But Georgie was with Lightning at least in one pass by the camera (see just below). Everyone was social and engaged!

Coming back from Bailey’s we were greeted by Charlotte (aka Charlie, on the left) and Peter. Two resident Pelicans that seem to just hang out on the fence at the water taxi stand. They were joined by a moray eel (not pictured) just below the dock. They might be waiting for a meal … though no one had fish to share.

Today was AKR’s visit to Maya Key where some of our group snorkeled the reef just to the south of Maya Key. Lots of fish were observed both inside and outside the reef. For example, lots of Sergeant majors, Bermuda chub, a French angelfish, and more. But the highlight of fish for our day was placement of the Giant Grouper sculpture by Bill Gee. It resides now just outside the entrance of the dining room along the side walkway of the resort. See it as our featured photo for this blog post!

The divers had a turbulent ride around to Maya Key but a calmer trek back. The dives were good and once everyone got cleaned up, we met in the game room to review the morning’s video data and to learn more about dolphin IDs. Dinner followed and a lively conversation was had by all about Flan – a yummy dessert originated in France, as well as enjoying some yummy meals!

Tomorrow, we start at 6:30 AM … another early day!

Cheers

P.S. It was not only Maya Key Monday, but Margarita Monday … and a big difference between DCP’s ecotour groups and our student groups.
