Sperm whales are well known for being deep-diving predators with extraordinary hunting abilities. However, they also have a fascinating social system, much of which is shaped by their reproductive strategies and calf-caring behavior. This talk will review what we currently know about sperm whale sociality and reproduction, as well as outstanding questions. For this talk, we expand beyond DCP’s team and main study species and will be joined by Ana Eguiguren.

Ana is a PhD student from Ecuador under Hal Whitehead’s supervision. Her research is centered around sperm whale behavior at a fine scale, and she’s interested in sharing the fascinating lives of this species.
This Deep Dive is geared toward ages 14+, but all are welcome.
