Over the past 50 years, dolphins have become very popular animals in Western cultures, and opportunities for close interactions between humans and free-ranging dolphins have boomed. In this talk, we will review the current distribution and deleterious behaviors and risks associated with close dolphin / human encounters worldwide, and management indications that may help improving animal welfare and conservation, and human safety.
This Deep Dive will be led by Pamela Carzon. Pamela is a PhD student at EPHE-PSL university (Paris, France) and co-founder of the NGO “Dauphins de Rangiroa” based in the Tuamotu Islands, French Polynesia. English is Pamela’s second language and we’re excited she’s giving this talk in English for us!
Through her PhD, Pamela has worked on free-ranging bottlenose dolphins’ behavioral responses to scuba diving tourism in Rangiroa Atoll and focused on the dolphins’ tolerance, temperament, and on the risks associated with repeated close dolphin / diver interactions. She has been supervised by Dr. Éric Clua and Dr. Fabienne Delfour and co-authored a review with Dr. Kathleen from DCP.
This Deep Dive is geared toward ages 14+, but all are welcome.
