Morning Gloom Yields to Dolphin Fun

We woke to a drizzle and heavy clouds.

But we had to see if the underwater visibility was better at Bailey’s Key. It was! Manon collected the underwater data today and turns out that Kami still has no concept of personal space. She was all over Manon, including swimming on top of her. This sequence was captured with the GoPro facing backward. In the featured photo, you see Kami (on right) spending time with Gizmo. French spent time with Sandy while Champ sometimes had Sandy and sometimes was with Rocky and still others was by himself.

And Bailey’s calf approached the MVA a couple times, getting closer every time. It was a good data collection session!

After a quick breakfast, Manon went on the snorkel boat to the aquarium (at west end) while Kathleen stayed back in the game room to pull video footage but also met with a few folks here at AKR to set up details for the coming CSU week. On the snorkel, underwater visibility was awesome … if you were swimming more than 1.5 m below the surface! The silty top layer also had a layer fresh water from the rain which made the tips of Manon’s fins visible to her at the surface. It was impossible to see any other person more than 2 m away to the side!

Lunch was good and we got to try some of the new additions to the menu – woohoo and very yummy!

Before lunch, we actually moved from our temporary room to our permanent home for the rest of our time here at AKR. We borrowed the giant trolley from the luggage guys to move our gear and personal effects in one trip! Our afternoon was slow with a bit of hammock time, some reading, playing with GoPro settings before the week, and more rain. (The theme of these days seems to always include rain!)

Before dinner, we visited the old lobby area – now the revitalized Frangipani bar and a game/relaxing area with pool table, ping pong table, sports TVs, and hanging cozy chairs.

We look forward to greeting the CSU student group tomorrow! We hope they have smooth travel with easy flights to Roatan.

Cheers
