Happy Labor Day!

We spent the holiday underwater …

Our day dawned clear and bright. Guess the old saying is true. Today was an awesome day for dolphin sightings! We had 6 encounters! and 10 sightings – our last at 21:43 this evening when a group of 5 dolphins swam by our stern. No light and no way to watch for other critters so no night swimming. But we were in the water so much today, I still feel water-logged. But NO complaints! We were traveling north to search a bit and then anchor on the little wreck known as 'dolphin wreck' by the captains. We saw a few pairs of bottlenose dolphins that had more interest in our stern wake than us. Then we spied a group of 5 spotted dolphins. I entered and they hung around, so everyone else entered too. Thus began the first of four encounters with this group which swelled to 14 dolphins! The encounters were about 10 minutes long each and we witnessed some very energetic and playful dolphins. Much jaw clapping and chasing and sand rubbing. Also much contact and pectoral fin to pec fin rubbing and body rubbing. Just amazing! Everyone went through about 2-3 rolls of film and I got much video. Later in the afternoon we had dolphins all around the boat … or so it seemed. We had some fins come close and we entered and were surprised to see 7 bottlenose dolphins! These dolphins swam with us for 4 minutes! Usually the bottlenose out here are NOT interested in swimmers. I guess things are changing. more information for data and analysis. Let's hope tomorrow is similar. Cheers Kathleen
