It’s Almost Time

Bimini Here We Come!

So, the last time we posted, Kathy and I were squinting their eyes in the sun after emerging from the hurricane season in one piece. This year, it’s me, Kelly Melillo, and Darcie Blanding who will be handling the Bimini field site. (For those of you who don’t know, Kathy is now a dive instructor with Bimini Undersea, and lives above the “Burger Queen”).
So, the last few weeks have been filled with administrative prep for the field. Last week we met with Kathleen, John and Justin and prepared cameras, housings, data sheets, GPS units and everything else that goes into studying dolphins on a relatively isolated island. Now it is time for Darcie and I to prepare all of our personal items, since for the most part, what you forget to bring, you don’t get to have. This usually results in one suitcase of toiletries/dive gear and one suitcase of boat clothes/bathing suits. Other than that, you don’t need much in Bimini…It’s great.
This Sunday is departure day for me. An early flight out of Connecticut, a long layover in Florida and sea plane to the island will fill my day. Then I’ll have a week to settle in and Darcie will arrive on 6 June. Once our internet connection is up and running, we’ll start posting regularly. We hope you’ll stay tuned throughout the season, keeping tabs on us and the Atlantic spotted dolphins we are trying to keep tabs on!

Until the island….
